Taking top prize with 40 points David Kay (26) was quick to praise his new TaylorMade M6 driver and matching fairway woods. Having battled against him in our side-bet 4BBB I can certainly attest that, as advertised, ‘the twist face technology provided straight distance and maximum forgiveness’. Indeed, Kay’s only blobs came from chipping into, but not out of, a bunker on the 9th and frustratingly failing to find his ball after a delightful drive on the 14th.

There may not have been any organized competitions but the hard working ground-staff were still out and about. The course is in remarkable condition and this has been helped in part by the support work being undertaken by artisan members. Filling divots and weeding greens may not be the most skillful or arduous tasks but, free of these time consuming tasks, the full-time staff can concentrate their efforts on more ambitious projects such as bunker reprofiling.

Winning with 111 points after adjustment and countback Francis Doherty (4), Andy Saunders (7), Guy Pickard (6) and David Allan (11) started strongly and finished with a flourish. Doherty and Saunders both birdied two of the first four holes. Pickard and Allan added two birdies apiece on the back nine and the team totted-up 18 points on the shortened 18th having netted two albatrosses and two eagles.

59 teams took part in the 4BBB and even off 85 percent of handicap only three teams failed to score 36 points or better. Not content with one turkey Mark Jones gobbled up the top prize again, this time ably assisted by Bryan McMahon.

In the third in the Tower Insurance Turkey Trot series Guy Sissons, Geoff Sugden, Stewart Fleming and his son Oliver had to rely on a back nine countback as, remarkably, another team also carded a +26 total of 134.

Each year the new captains at Castletown Golf Club nominate a charity which will benefit from their fund-raising activities. This year, for the first time ever, both captains chose the same charity. The Manx Stroke Foundation is particularly poignant for the lady captain Maryann Dunn as her mother had sadly succumbed to a stroke. Men’s captain Graham Harris had no hesitation in agreeing to support such a worthy cause.

Fresh from his latest lesson David Litton (19) converted four of his numerous birdie putts to take the Syd Ashworth Trophy with 43 points. Earlier this month Litton had secured second spot in the Suntera Global medal with 87, nett 68.
As well as being fitted for new irons second-placed Mark Grace (16) received direction on delivering his driver. Other than over exuberance on the 9th Grace was in favour of the swing change as was evidenced by his four over par back nine for 22 of his 41 points.

Back in January 2016 Messrs. Grace and Jones made their mark combining to reap the rewards. History repeated itself on Saturday as the two Marks fired five birdies, eight pars and four nett pars between them. They didn’t dovetail on the Road Hole but even so, off 85 percent of their handicaps they accumulated 47 points.

Fynoderee Gin’s marketeer Nick Wild (28) discovered the perfect tonic, introductory lessons with club pro Charlie Simpson. Playing in his first ever medal Wild went on to win with 94, nett 66. His route to success included three pars, ten bogeys, four double bogeys and an extravagant eight on the 18th. But for that quadruple bogey Wild would have completed the course in 18 over par, ten better than his shot allowance.

Storm Aiden swept our shores on Saturday, so the scheduled Suntera Global sponsored monthly medal must wait for seven days. Never-the-less Dan Hattersley (11) certainly seems to be making the most of his winter membership at Castletown Golf Club. Hattersley played on both Saturday and Sunday on the previous weekend finishing in the money on both days.

Back in August scratch-player Michael Charmer was the countback casualty in the Captain’s Day competition despite having posted 44 points with his fantastic nett 65 off the back tees. This time level par 72 off the white tees proved good enough to take top-spot. Charmer birdied the 3rd and bogeyed the 11th but struck in a sweet sixteen pars in his winning round.

The last gasp victor McMahon (12) birdied the opening hole and bogeyed the short 8th to turn at luscious level par. His more pedestrian back nine contained six bogeys which were separated by three pars from the 12th to the 14th.

Not content with launching the longest drive on the 11th Brian Kelly (16) went on to lift the VC trophy sponsored by Castletown’s vice-captain Gez Bradley. Kelly’s eye was in early with four pointer book-end birdies on the 1st and the 9th. These counteracted back-to-back blobs on the 5th and the 6th so Kelly turned with 18 points. Completing the course with five pars and four nett pars Kelly accumulated 41 winning points.
