There was a three way tie at the top of the SMP Partners sponsored monthly medal at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Course record holder Simon Murray (5) took top spot with the best gross score, a one over par 73, nett 66, after the two stroke white tee’s adjustment.
Murray started with six straight pars and then suffered a sandy seven on the 7th immediately followed by a rewarding two, and then a bogey on his ‘personal bogey’ hole. Birdies on the 10th and 12th returned Murray to par and only a lonely bogey on the 15th spoilt his inward run.
The second golfer on Route 66 was Robin Mackenzie (28) who only recently returned from his annual trip to America. Mackenzie’s gross 96 included a par, three 7’s and four 6’s but, with two strokes on 12 of the holes, all the rest were converted to nett pars or better.
Phil Games (13), the third on nett 66, had a game of two halves, unfortunately for him they were the wrong way round for countback purposes. Games was only three over after ten holes, but then squandered six shots even after a beautiful birdie on the 17th.
Fourth placed Andrew Gerrard (6) posted pars on 15 holes, only the 7th, 8th and 15th eluded his arrow like accuracy for 75, nett 67, after adjustment. Missing out on countback with his nett 67, Chris Reynolds (11) had two two birdies on the front nine but lost out after finishing bogey, bogey.
Continuing his rich vein of form Andy Dent (11) headed a group of four players with nett 68’s. Commiserations to Chris Howland (7), Dave Humbles (19) and Mark Todd (10) who were the unlucky losers.
The ‘next’ best gross score winner Michael Charmer (1) started with an eagle but gave back those two shots over the last three holes to conjure up a 73 having also bogeyed the 4th. Stuart Fleming wisely chose the yellow tees to take that prize with his nett 72.
The midweek ‘Flowerpower’ Stableford was won by Rick O’Donnell followed by Paul Russett and Paul Keeley with 42, 40 and 33 points respectively. The first lady home in fourth place was Steph Gregg with 32.
So far 101 members have signed up for this coming Saturday’s Stableford when we compete for the Neville Peterson Memorial Cup.
