Whether our Anthony Hopkins needs to wear ‘The Mask of Zorro’ is debatable, but he certainly slashed a few shots off his handicap (22) by winning the Neville Peterson Memorial Trophy with 42 points at Castletown on Saturday. Playing ‘target golf’ Hopkins stabbed in four gross pars which helped him net seven birdies and ten pars. Only the 6th, on which he scored a nett bogey, caused him to card less than two points.
Half the expected field failed to start, put off no doubt by the weather forecast. Those that made the effort were well rewarded as the rain relented, the wind abated and the greens were receptive. Second placed Stuart Campbell (13) certainly proved the point as he tapped-in ten pars and netted five more adding up to 40 points. What a pity that he started with an N/R.
On 37 points five members managed to make their case for third place. With six of his nine pars on the inward half The Shore’s Mark Walker (12) took the podium place with 21 points. Three of the others all accumulated 19 over the back nine.
Tying with Pete Thomas (7) until the last hole former Castletown FC manager Mark Teare (6) needed a last gasp winner to filch fourth with a four pointer birdie. Thomas finished fifth with his mere par. Taking sixth Michael Charmer (1) went round in three over after an uncharacteristic seven on the 6th, but his procession of pars only added up to a back six of 12.
Out of the main prizes, because of a back nine of 17, Michael Katkjaer (10) captured 40 percent of the two’s pot with his accuracy on the 8th and 13th; the other recipients being Chris Howland, Peter Miller and Mel Todd.
Michelle Bowen (36) was the Flower Power midweek Stableford winner with 38 points. Former policeman Guy Pickard (6) apprehended second spot. His 34 points being more back nine loaded than third placed Peter Easthope (5).
£1,100 was raised for the captains’ charities from the Yorkshire Day open event which was sponsored by MannBenham Advocates, Black Sheep Brewery, Ultratech Associates, Robinsons, IoM Chinese Medicine Ltd and members David Allan, Geoff Sugden, Graham Harris and Bob Adcock.
